Model Trains and Tracks

DCC for the real world

Where do I start….

I’ve had many years of pleasure model-making, especially when it comes to model trains. I have been drawn down many ‘rabbit holes’ (most memorably, P4/S4 in the 70s) but the one thing I am not is a precision engineer so you won’t find any complicated engineering things here – just saws, files and the odd (in both senses – occasional and unusual) use of a Dremel… (I’ve set-up a ‘Timeline’ page which discusses my history and my adventures).

So, what has made me do this ‘blog’?

I’ve learnt many things over the years and some recent discussions have made me realise that there are modellers of all ages out there who haven’t the experience that I’ve had and, as a result, are cautious about taking steps into the hobby.

I’ve broken down the site into a number of areas to try and provide some focus – mainly for me but hopefully it will help you too!

  • Skills (?) and approach – Some articles discussing how and why I approach tasks.
  • Don’t do this… – Some recommendations on ‘do and don’t’ approach to the above approaches.
  • DCC – There is a strong focus on DCC and, in particular, DCC Sound in N scale in this blog. This section is about the basic principles and general discussion of DCC technology.
  • Specific projects – Over the years I’ve captured photos and details of DCC and particularly DCC Sound conversions that I’ve done. I will be documenting these here.
  • Other projects – I’ve done work with various technology projects and these are captured here – as they develop.
  • 3D Printing – A topic that is close to my heart – as is my 3D printer – but looking at practical use of the printer.

This blog is about my experiences and my advice – and some of the things you will read here are likely to annoy you but equally I hope that you will find wisdom in some places!

My approach to my hobby has been varied and I’ve had the good fortune to be able do many things that not everyone can. I hope that if you dig through the many pages of rubbish here, you’ll find some golden nuggets that will (a) save you money and (b) help you get much more enjoyment from your hobby.

Enjoy…
